I never get tired of Star Wars and I don't think I'll ever run out of Star Wars craft ideas! This year for Star Wars Day I decided to make some easy DIY bead bracelets featuring a few of my favorite characters – droids.
I made this craft with adults in mind, but these would be fun to make with kids too! Younger kids may have trouble handling and stringing the tiny glass seed beads. (And I have had a few beads break over the years, though rarely.)
If you're imagining a tray of tiny glass beads being spilled all over the floor, you might want to swap for a different type of bead. Pony beads and Perler beads are great for little hands
While I was shopping for this project I picked up this Star Wars Perler bead kit too – it's got the perfect colors already sorted.
This tutorial includes the color scheme and patterns for R2D2, C3PO, and BB-8. I brainstormed a lot of color combos for this craft project, so I've included more fun ideas below too.
Star Wars bracelet colors
There are tons of characters in Star Wars, so there are a lot of ways you can make a different bead bracelet just by changing the colors of the beads you use.
I made just the 3 in this tutorial, but here are some more color ideas:
- Yoda – greens and browns
- Jedi – blues and browns
- Sith – black, red, gray, and metallic
- Boba Fett – gray, green, yellow, and red
- Chewbacca – browns, black, and metallic
You could also add in some small alphabet beads to include specific characters' names, a favorite quote, or just "Star Wars."
I tried to figure out how to make a bracelet with part of the iconic Star Wars crawl, but it didn't really work. I think if you could find alphabet beads that are yellow letters on a black background, that might look cool.
How to make a bead bracelet
Supplies
- size 6/0 seed beads – I've purchased beads in single-color small bottles, large bottles, and multicolored strands.
- R2D2 – dark blue, white, red, and silver
- C3PO – gold and silver (and red if you want, from The Rise of Skywalker)
- BB-8 – orange, white, black, and silver
- size 0.5 mm elastic cord
- scissors
- clothespins, optional for holding elastic ends
Instructions
1. Measure your arm.
You can make this bracelet in any size! Elastic is easy to work with and flexible, of course, so you don't have to be precise.
To measure your arm, star by unwinding some of the elastic. Hold it around your wrist without stretching it. Leave about a 1-inch overlap for tying, then cut the cord to that length.
It should fit comfortably around your arm without being tight but will stretch to go over your hand.
For a quick reference, my elastic is about 8 inches long.
2. String the beads.
Choose which character you're making and separate out several beads in the colors needed.
Hold one end of the elastic closed with your hand or a clothespin. String the beads onto the other end. You can follow the pattern I did, create your own, or mix it up however you like.
The number of beads you need will depend on the length of the elastic, but all of mine used between 55 and 65 beads. Make sure you leave about half an inch on each end for tying.
3. Tie and trim the ends.
After you're finished adding beads, line up the ends and tie them in a simple overhand knot. To do this, hold the ends together, wrap them around themselves, and put the ends through the hole that creates.
Pull the elastic tight, test the fit on your arm, then trim off the tails.
That's it! Repeat the process to make as many Star Wars bead bracelet designs as you like. You could also make a matching necklace by stringing beads onto a longer length of elastic or jewelry cord.
